Japanese Verbs

By OptiLingo

There are two categories of Japanese verbs: Past and non-past. The past forms usually have -ta or -shita at the end of the sentence:

For example:                   I ate sushi = Watashi wa sushi o tabemashita/tabeta.

The present form of Japanese verbs is usually followed by -masu or – ru

For example:                  I eat sushi = Watashi wa sushi o tabemasu/taberu.

Another type of the present verb form can be compared to the progressives in English language.

For example:                   I am eating sushi = Watashi wa sushi o tabete imasu.

I am drinking water = Watashi was mizu o nonde imasu.
